Mice who took the highest dose of xanthohumol reduced their LDL ( “bad”) cholesterol by 80%, their insulin by 42%, and the level of IL-6 (a biomarker of inflammation ) by 78% compared to mice that did not receive xanthohumol.
The mice continued to grow during the study, so their total weight increased in all areas. However, mice that received xanthohumol increased their weight by 22% less than mice that did not receive xanthohumol -. Although all mice received the same daily food intake
The researchers also noted that the mice who took xanthohumol seemed to increase their oxygen consumption and metabolic rate, which could be related to control improved weight.
Ultimately, with all other things remain constant, mice that were fed xanthohumol were significantly better in the physical form that mice that were not fed with xanthohumol.
“This is the first time we’ve seen a compound with the potential to address many health problems,” said Christopher Miranda , an assistant research professor with the Linus Pauling Institute OSU and lead author of this study. “They were very dramatic improvements.”
However, the researchers cautioned that more research is needed before the safety and efficacy of xanthohumol can be confirmed in humans.
