World Health Organization Says Processed Meat Causes Cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified as a carcinogen processed meat, which causes cancer. And it has classified red meat as a probable carcinogen, which probably causes cancer. IARC Cancer Agency is the World Health Organization.

Processed meat includes sausages, ham, bacon, sausage, and some sausages. It refers to meat that has been treated in some way to preserve or flavor. The processes include salting, curing, fermenting, and smoking. Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb and goat.

Twenty-two experts from 10 countries reviewed more than 800 studies to reach its conclusions. They found that eating 50 grams of processed meat every day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. That’s the equivalent of about 4 strips of bacon or 1 hot dog. For red meat, there was no evidence of increased risk of colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer.

the lifetime risk of a person developing colon cancer is generally 5%. To put the numbers in perspective, the increased risk of eating the amount of meat processed in the study could increase the risk of life for average of nearly 6%.

Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, CEO of American Cancer Society nutrition and physical activity, says: “We should be limiting red and processed meat to help reduce the risk of colon cancer, and possibly the risk of other cancers. the hot dog or a hamburger once in a while is fine. ”

The American Cancer Society has always recommended a diet that limits processed meat and red meat, which is rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The guidelines of the American Cancer Society nutrition and physical activity for cancer prevention recommend choosing fish, poultry, or beans instead of red meat and processed meat.
