Should You Eat Before Bed?

With all websites and weight loss magazines out there, you get hit with a lot of weight loss tips and advice. Some tips are good, some are bad. One of the most popular, and what I think are the worst pieces of advice is to stop eating from 6 pm until the next morning. There are many reasons why I think this is bad advice, and can actually be harmful to your weight loss and goals.

One rule that I think many people trying to lose weight is to eat have taken frequent small meals instead of three large meals. It is generally recommended that you eat every three hours to keep your metabolism to burn fat. With this advice, most people would at least twelve hours without food! You would not do that during the day, so why do that all night?

is not good for your metabolism, and not good for the muscles. Even if you are not bodybuilding, you want to lose fat – not muscle. And what about people who go to the gym after work and did not get home until after 7:00? It is not supposed to eat?

I think the biggest with weight loss thing is staying within its objectives of calories and macronutrients. Assuming you eat healthy during the day and is hydrated, if you feel hungry, there is probably a reason. You feel hungry because your body needs food.

said, I think what you’re eating is important. Unless only exercised or have not had enough during the day, you do not really need a lot of carbohydrates at this time. Carbohydrates are mainly used as fuel high intensity, and if you are about to go to bed, you really do not need to use that kind of energy.

is best to get some kind of protein; cottage cheese and yogurt are good choices because they contain casein protein digests slowly. Basically, you want to eat something that is slowly absorbed so that is released into the body all night instead of all at once.

If all that is not enough to convince you, I found that I sleep much better when I do not go to bed hungry. Good sleep = better muscle recovery, healthier all day eating patterns, weight loss and more success. The advice you should not eat after 6:00 is really just a myth. For weight loss it is necessary to pay attention to your body and watch your calories. Listen to your body and eat a healthy snack before bedtime is good for weight loss, not the opposite.
