Self-compassion beats self-esteem for healthy body image

Natural Health News to – regardless of their weight, women with greater self-pity to have a better body image and are more able to cope with the ups and downs of life, according to new research.

Research of the Faculty of Arts, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada found that this self-pity could be an important means to increase positive body image and protect girls and young women against practices unhealthy weight control and eating disorders.

“Women may experience a more positive and better eating habits body image if disappointments and anguish with kindness and recognition that these struggles are a normal part of life approach,” said Professor Allison Kelly, Department of Psychology Waterloo, and lead author of the study.

“How we treat ourselves in difficult times, that may seem unrelated to our body and food seems to have an influence on how we feel about our bodies and our relationship with food.”

This study in the journal Body Image collected data from 153 female college students and made calculations of BMI based on height and weight self-reported each woman.

The research team assessed levels of body image self-pity, self-esteem, and eating behaviors through a series of questionnaires. Results add to a growing body of literature suggesting that self-compassion may offer unique benefits that self-esteem does not.

Self-esteem comes from the evaluation of oneself as above average, and therefore may be limited in helping people cope with the deficiencies identified.

Self-pity has been described as being aware when we are struggling with feelings of inadequacy, despair, confusion and other forms of stress and responding ourselves with kindness and understanding.

“There is something about a high level of acceptance and understanding of oneself helps people who do not necessarily see their bodies more positively, but rather recognize the imperfections of their bodies and be fine with them . “said professor Kelly.

This makes self-pity a potentially effective and healthy in preventing eating disorders and promoting the health of women of all sizes tool.
