Selenium compounds help immune system fight cancer

Natural Health News – New evidence shows that selenium – found naturally in foods like garlic and broccoli and various nuts -. can help slow the immune over-response, which is a key factor in certain cancers

The results say researchers from the University of Copenhagen can help improve cancer treatment.

The immune system is designed to eliminate things not normally found in the body. Cells undergoing change, for example, precursors of cancer cells therefore are usually recognized and eliminated by the immune system.

Unfortunately, different cancer cells contain mechanisms that block the immune system’s ability to recognize them, allowing them to freely follow the development of cancer.

The cancers such as melanoma, prostate cancer and certain types of leukemia weaken the body by excessive activation of the innate immune system.

“You can say that the molecules that stimulate excess activate the immune system and cause its collapse, and they are, of course, interested in blocking this mechanism. We have now shown that certain selenium compounds , found naturally in, for example, garlic and broccoli, effectively block special immunostimulatory molecule that plays a serious role for aggressive cancers such as melanoma, prostate cancer and certain types of leukemia, “says professor Søren Skov.

Small Steps Toward a better treatment

Certain cancer cells overexpress immunostimulatory molecules in liquid form. Such overstimulation has a negative impact on the immune system.

In this study, the researchers focused on what is known as ligands NGK2D. There are eight variants, one in particular has drawn the attention of researchers because it takes liquid form. It is precisely the molecular solution causes serious problems, once the cancer is raging. All blood is, so to speak, infected, and thus the molecule is used as a marker of serious illness.

“molecules are both on the surface of cancer cells and dissolved in the blood of the person concerned. We are now able to show that selenium compounds appear to have a very beneficial effect when it comes to neutralizing NGK2D ligand special variant – both soluble and when the molecule is placed on the cell surface, “says professor Søren Skov.

Researchers are constantly learning more about the mechanisms of disease aggressive skin cancers, blood and reproductive organs

“Overexpression seen in cancers such as melanoma, cancer prostate cancer and certain types of leukemia significantly impairs the immune system. If we can find ways to slow over-stimulation, we are on the right track, “says Søren Skov.

The results, published in Journal of Biological Chemistry are another small step towards better cancer treatments with fewer side effects, he adds.
