Organic milk contains more healthy fats than conventional milk

Natural Health News – organic milk contains a healthy balance of essential fatty acids and higher protein levels than conventional milk, according to new research.

Researchers at Washington State University tested more than 400 samples of milk throughout the US and it found that the ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 in organic milk was healthier (2: 3 averaged over a year, compared with 5: 8 in conventional milk)

in addition, other fatty acids that promote health, proteins and nutrients (for example antioxidants) are also present in the organic milk higher concentrations. The research was published in the journal PLoS One .

Getting the balance right

Meanwhile omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, too much of the former and not enough of the afternoon is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), some forms of cancer, and a range of other health problems.

The National Institutes of Health , for example, reports that:

“Most American diets provide more than 10 times more omega-6 fatty acids omega-3. There is a general consensus that more people should consume less fatty acids. omega-6 and omega-3 to promote good health ”

So what does this mean?

In order to quantify what this could mean for the health of people the researchers looked at three different dietary interventions and their potential for improving omega-6 ratio of acid omega-3 fatty diet of a (fictitious) healthy and active 30-year -old woman whose diet provided one of 11: 3 omega 6 and omega-3. The goal was to get your diet closer to the more favorable. 2: 3 ratio

Interventions where:

  • Increased consumption of dairy products from 3 to 4.5 servings per day.
  • The change from conventional to organic dairy products.
  • Looking for low omega-6 alternatives to the three foods are known to be rich in omega-6 (pita chips instead of tortilla chips, canola (rapeseed) instead of soybean oil, canola (rapeseed) oil margarine instead of regular margarine).

Perhaps not surprisingly that simply healthier choice, but similar alternatives to the three foods known to have high levels of omega-6, produce 70% of the necessary reduction of omega-6 to omega-ratio 3 fatty acids.

However, switching to a high consumption of dairy products and consumption of organic dairy products could reach 39% of both the progress needed to achieve the most favorable. 2: 3 ratio – the last option that gives you more nutritional benefits to lower consumption

Good news for producers of organic dairy

Dozens of studies, most of them carried out in Europe have shown that higher levels of acidic health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids in organic milk compared with conventional milk, as well as lower levels of omega-6 fatty acids.

But this is the first major study of this effect in the US .. Researchers believe they have discovered the difference is very significant and probably the most important organic food consumption on nutritional benefit US ..

the results are also of great help for organic dairy producers. Organic farmers rely much more heavily than conventional in feed grass-based forage promoting omega-3 fatty acids in milk, while producers of conventional milk have become increasingly dependent on corn and farmers other cereal-based foods that increase the omega-6 fatty acids in milk. heavy grain rations also reduce the protein content of milk.

An analysis of the results, the principal investigator Charles Benbrook research professor at the Center of Washington State University for Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources note that if you can not afford to buy organic products, you should drink whole milk for reduced fat varieties missing healthy fats found naturally in milk. At the same time, however, you should cut back on other foods containing omega-6 fatty acids, such as fried foods, which can be dangerous to the heart at high levels.
