New research confirms a link between consumption of nuts and peanut and lower mortality rates for a number of diseases.
Men and women who eat at least 10 grams of nuts or peanuts per day have a lower risk of dying from some leading causes of death than people who do not eat nuts or peanuts.
The reduction in mortality was stronger for respiratory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes, followed by cancer and cardiovascular disease. The effects were similar in men and women. Peanuts and tree nuts both contain various compounds such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, various vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, which may contribute to lower rates of mortality.
In contrast to peanuts, no association between consumption of peanut butter and mortality risk was found. But that could be the quality of peanut butter tested. In addition to peanuts, many – but not all – peanut butter also contains added ingredients like vegetable oils and salt. In the past, it has been shown that peanut butter containing trans fatty acids and therefore the peanut butter composition is different from peanuts. Adverse health effects of salt and trans fatty acids may inhibit the protective effects of peanuts.
