Longer life for lovers of tree nuts and peanuts

Natural Health News – If you’re nuts about nuts – here’s something very good news.

New research confirms a link between consumption of nuts and peanut and lower mortality rates for a number of diseases.

Men and women who eat at least 10 grams of nuts or peanuts per day have a lower risk of dying from some leading causes of death than people who do not eat nuts or peanuts.

The reduction in mortality was stronger for respiratory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes, followed by cancer and cardiovascular disease. The effects were similar in men and women. Peanuts show at least as strong reductions in mortality as nuts, peanut butter but not associated with lower mortality, researchers from Maastricht University found. What you need to know

A new large-scale study has found that regular consumption of nuts and peanuts can prevent early death from a variety of diseases.

Rates of heart disease, but also cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases and neurodegenerative down among those who eat peanuts and nuts.

Peanute butter, possibly due to their unhealthy additives do not have the same protective effect.

In this study, published in International Journal of Epidemiology was part of a research project long-term among the more than 120,000 Dutch men and women 55-69 years of age. Then compared with the overall mortality and cause-specific since 1986.

Not only heart health

Associations between intake of nuts and peanuts and confirmed cardiovascular death previous results of the American and Asian studies which often focus on cardiovascular disease.

But this new study found that premature death due to cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases and neurodegenerative also reduced among users of peanuts and nuts.

The project leader and epidemiologist Professor Piet van will den Brandt said: “It was remarkable that the substantially lower mortality than previously observed in the levels of consumption of 15 grams of nuts or peanuts on average per day (about half a handful). a higher intake was not associated with a greater reduction in mortality risk. This was also supported by a meta-analysis of previously published studies along with the cohort study Netherlands, where cancer and mortality respiratory showed the same pattern of dose-response “.

nut nutrition

Peanuts and tree nuts both contain various compounds such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, various vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, which may contribute to lower rates of mortality.

In contrast to peanuts, no association between consumption of peanut butter and mortality risk was found. But that could be the quality of peanut butter tested. In addition to peanuts, many – but not all – peanut butter also contains added ingredients like vegetable oils and salt. In the past, it has been shown that peanut butter containing trans fatty acids and therefore the peanut butter composition is different from peanuts. Adverse health effects of salt and trans fatty acids may inhibit the protective effects of peanuts.

Other studies have found protective effect of breastfeeding peanut butter consumption during pre-adolescence. So if you like peanut butter – that can be of benefit to ensure it is unique ingredient it is peanuts
