The need for vitamin D is quite well known. It is essential to living a healthy life because it strengthens bones, reduces the risk of heart disease, reduces blood pressure and improves the chances of recovery from cancer.
A recent study has suggested a fun way to improve the level of vitamin D in your body, go sunny holiday. The increased sun exposure on holidays is perfect to cure the deficiency of vitamin D.
For the purpose of research, a team of experts from the University of Edinburgh measured the level of vitamin D in mainland Scotland and Orkney, which is an island group in northern Scotland and then the results were compared.
Lack of vitamin D is often connected to multiple sclerosis (MS) and Scotland and Orkney are at the top of the list of countries with MS. The researchers were interested in whether vitamin D deficiency in these two places was causing the high rate of MS.
The researchers measured vitamin D levels in 2078 adults in Orkney who participated in the Study of Complex Diseases Orkney (Orkney Islands) from 2005 to 2011. The result of this study was compared with the control group mainland Scotland.
found that although people of Orkney were suffering from vitamin D deficiency, the level was higher than those of mainland Scotland. Among them, those who left for regular holidays in sunny places and farmers working in the sun had higher levels of vitamin D than others.
Dr. Jim Wilson, the lead researcher, said that despite the deficiency of vitamin D has been known as one of the causes of MS, but in the case of the Orkneys, lack of vitamin can not explain the higher rate of MS.
The researchers suggest, since their study sunny places connected with increasing vitamin D, your holiday in a warmer destination could be an effective way to improve the level of vitamin D.
