vision, treatment As we all age, some natural decline of our senses is to be expected.

However, even a slight deterioration of our vision can be frightening. You can not just get in the way of our ability to understand our environment, which can have a significant impact on our comfort, security and full independence.

is not good news. related vision loss with age may respond better to a new type of laser therapy.

An improved laser treatment has been shown to delay the progression of related macular degeneration with age (AMD) , which is a leading cause of vision loss. This is according to a study by the University of Melbourne in Australia, published in Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

The researchers examined the effectiveness of what is called the “nanosecond laser” for patients with early AMD. They found that unlike other laser treatments, this low-impact, low energy type is unlikely that damage to the retina. The retina is the tissue in the back of the eyes containing light detection cells much needed.

The tests included a total of 50 patients with AMD – those who had only one treatment session nanosecond laser and tested two years later. It is the first study to explain how the new laser treatment can improve eye health in patients with AMD.

What is macular degeneration related to age?

Overall, AMD is a relatively painless eye condition that results in loss of central vision over time. Is the leading cause of permanent impairment of fine or close-up view – which is necessary for reading – among people aged 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) . Estimates suggest Americans over 40 years with AMD are about 1.8 million, while another 7.3 million are at risk of developing it, CDC reports.

AMD correction through laser treatment

As for treatment, laser surgery is usually used to seal leaking blood vessels caused by AMD, which slows loss of central vision. The dry form of AMD causes a gradual breakdown of light-sensitive cells in the retina, and this can not significantly affect vision.

The wet form, however, occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina. These vessels are lost blood and fluid, eventually causing scarring. When this happens, the loss of vision can occur fairly quickly.

Both hot and cold therapy laser is used to treat wet AMD. Laser hot seals blood vessels leak treatment abnormally in the retina, preventing its growth. On the other hand, a cold laser can destroy new vessels, leaking without affecting normal tissue.

If the blood vessels are growing near or below the center of the retina, cold laser treatment can only be better for you.

New therapy is not completely free of risk

But beware: Such procedures and treatments are not without risk and can be costly. On one hand, the laser can further damage the center of the retina, resulting in some loss of vision and possible permanent blind spot. This is especially likely if escapes from blood vessels are too close, or directly in the center of the retina.

So be sure to consult with your doctor before receiving laser treatment to correct AMD. Remember to ask how all these risks apply to you while mentioning any other concerns you may have. After all, you’re not getting any younger!
