Natural Health News – Adolescents with higher blood levels of omega-3 can process information more fast, compared to those with the lowest levels, according to a new study.

Participants in the study included 266 Dutch adolescents between the ages of 13 and 15 who were taken from a larger, ongoing study (Food2Learn) supplements krill oil. The researchers took blood samples from all adolescents and cognitive performance evaluated through a series of tests. What you need to know

“ In a new study of adolescents 13-15 years of age, Dutch researchers found that many of them had a suboptimal state of omega-3 and those with higher omega-3 status performed better on tests designed to study memory and information processing.
“ The authors suggest that low teens in omega-3 supplementation may be an easy and relatively inexpensive to improve school performance.
Participants also completed a questionnaire fish consumption, which showed that 13.9% of adolescents do not consume any fish at all and that 77% of them rarely eat fish. As a result, the average Omega-3 Index was 3.83% – much less than the recommended 8% -11%.
The results showed that each 1% increase in the rate of omega-3 was associated with a significant increase in performance on a test of standard memory and better performance on a test of concentration and attention.
