GREENVILLE, N.C. – What kind of juice are you drinking with your breakfast? It turns out that the preference of your taste buds could affect if your body attacks a disease.
In September, before the cold and flu season, the VERIFY team removed a popular publication about grape juice. The publication stated that grape juice changes the pH of your intestinal tract and prevents the stomach virus. Novant Health dietitian Krista Kiger said there is no research to prove that grape juice can change the digestive system to prevent the stomach virus, but grapes are excellent antioxidants, which maintain healthy cells and can prevent stomach virus first.

That VERIFY followed up the Good Morning Show viewer, Sharon Willis. She wrote: "I saw your VERIFICATION on grape juice, but what about pineapple juice? I saw this on Facebook and I was wondering."

The publication seems to come from Samsara Herbs, an online store that sells herbs for natural remedies. The post states, "When you drink pineapple juice, you help dissolve mucus in the lungs. Pineapple juice is an excellent cough suppressant, because it contains an enzyme known as bromelain, which has strong anti-inflammatory benefits."

Can pineapple juice cure a cough?
- Thomas Vagts – Registered Dietitian – Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center
Vagts said the claim about pineapple juice may be true.
"Although pineapple juice has been promoted in many home remedies that some have experienced with cough suppressants, there is no scientific evidence that has been shown to suppress all coughs," he said.
Vagts further explained that the natural properties of pineapple juice, such as bromelain and high vitamin C content, are anti-inflammatory and support the immune system. That means pineapple juice may It helps suppress some coughs, depending on the origin and severity.
Pineapple juice can suppress cough, but it is not a panacea. Talk to a doctor if you have a persistent cough.
