Adults still use childhood remedies to fight colds, according to surveys

Adults still use cold remedies or remedies that their parents taught them as children, according to a new survey.

Gargling with salt water for a sore throat and drinking a hot tea before bedtime were some of the most common health tips that were transmitted to respondents.

The 2,000 adult survey found that 45 percent still use their family's traditional remedies.

More unconventional advice from the families of the participants included drinking onion water from a pot of boiled onions for chest infections and drinking orange peel tea to cure a cold in less than 24 hours.

The survey conducted by Olbas found that seven out of 10 respondents preferred to try to cure a cold with home remedies instead of visiting a doctor for advice.

Respondents first went to their mother when they felt bad for help diagnosing symptoms, with the Internet as the second port of call.

However, when seeking advice on colds and other minor health problems, the pharmacist is the opinion that participants trust most.

27 percent said they go to a pharmacist or GP for a medically proven cure for the common cold when they feel sick.

The family doctor and Olbas expert, Dr. Roger Henderson, said: “Autumn is here and for millions of Britons, the cold season has officially arrived.

“Fortunately, we have many tools at our disposal to treat the symptoms of the common cold, whether over-the-counter solutions or more holistic solutions transmitted from one member of the family to another or popularized in our culture obsessed with health. "
