A woman had a baby. Then her hospital charged her $39.35 to hold it.

This is the bill for a new labor and delivery service in the United States. E includes a charge of $ 39.35 holding the baby after birth. Really.

The image of the bill, now widely shared on Reddit, shows a load of “s skin to skin after c.” Reddit user who posted explained in some comments. He was not angry about the position – said the hospital did a great job delivering her child. Instead, he spoke over the absurdity of American health.

Section C of the nurse asked my wife if she would like to make skin-to-skin after birth. Which, of course, someone might say yes too. We just realized that in the bill today.

nurse the baby with me about my wife’s neck / chest. Even I borrowed my camera to take some photos for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and had a positive experience. Just a laugh to see that in the bill.

A labor and delivery nurse added some context for why this burden might appear in a bill -. That requires an additional nurse come in and see the baby while being held by the mother

As a labor and delivery nurse, who can explain this type. I did not know that hospitals pay for it, but doing ‘skin to skin’ in the operating room requires an additional staff member to be present only to see the baby. We used to take all babies to the nursery once the NICU team made sure everything was fine. “Skin to skin” in the OR is a relatively new thing and requires a second RN Labor and Delivery to entering the operating room and make sure the baby is safe.

Most of the bill talks about the mysterious medical bills can be, even for exceptionally common procedures such as delivery of a baby. Vox Johnny Harris recently did a project where he tried to find out the cost of the birth of his wife before it happened. It did not work out.

Did dozen phone calls to different billing offices, but they could not find anyone who could tell the amount of an uncomplicated delivery ultimately will cost. This is what he wrote about it:

What impressed me most about my quest to learn about hospital prices was the fact that consumers have no way of knowing where a hospital is located in the wide range of prices. Consumers have few options to interact with prices up after receiving treatment. It is much easier to figure out how much it costs to park in a hospital how much it will cost for treatment.

All this results in a system in which consumers are totally divorced price. This is dangerous because the prices are a key ingredient for a healthy market. We rely on the prices of all sectors to communicate the value and drive competition. The lack of transparency can lead to an artificial inflation of prices, so that consumers pay more for treatment that is not of better quality.
